February 18, 2008 Q&A: Cold-triggered asthma Q: I'm a woman in my early 50s. Last year, I was diagnosed with asthma for the first time, apparently triggered by the extreme allergy season in spring 2007. This winter, I have noticed that even a 10 to 15 minute walk when it is extremely cold triggers my asthma. Are there ways to prevent this from happening or should I work out inside on cold winter days? A: According to Chinese medicine, cold weather can "attack" the lung and inhibit normal distribution of "qi" (pronounced chee), or energy. A person's lungs are very important for the proper functioning of the immune system. Allergies, a hyper-reaction of the immune system, are a sign that there is an imbalance in the lung energy. I have been very successful in my practice treating both allergies and asthma with acupuncture and herbs, relieving the suffering caused by seasonal allergies, and reducing or eliminating use of inhalers. -- Robin L. February 25, 2008 Extinguish all smoking materials ...Robin Schiesser of Acupuncture Boulder does eight sessions with each patient. The main part of the treatment is five needles on the ear, which is basic addiction protocol, and helps in reducing cravings. "I've found it (acupuncture) to be very effective and it just has so many benefits that it's a nice alternative to the drugs that can have so many side effects," Schiesser said. "The biggest side effect of acupuncture is relaxation." QuestionsClick here to e-mail your questions and to find out if acupuncture and Traditional East Asian Medicine can alleviate your condition.
